-----PREFACE------------------------------------------------------------
This package contains the DeskTop Advisor (R) hyperdocument authoring
system and browser (Version 2.0), by Ivden Technologies, Inc. This
document contains only a brief description of the package and its
features, along with instructions for its installation. Detailed
documentation is included in the package, but it is in archived form,
and is more easily read after installation.
If you've ever wished you could easily create and distribute interactive
multimedia documents or develop context-sensitive, hypertext help
systems, then DeskTop Advisor is the program for you.
DeskTop Advisor is a shareware program. This evaluation version
includes all features of the program, and is not crippled in any way.
You may use it for up to 30 days, without charge (see README.1ST for
more details). If you like the program, and wish to continue its use
after this evaluation period, you are required to pay for the program
(see REGISTER.FRM for more details). Any fee you may have paid to
others (disk vendors, dealers, etc.) to obtain this evaluation version
was a fee for their copying and distribution services, rather than a
payment for continued use of the program.
-----INTRODUCTION TO DESKTOP ADVISOR------------------------------------
Thank You for trying DeskTop Advisor Version 2.0!!
DeskTop Advisor is a hyperdocument authoring and delivery system.
It is an easy-to-use tool for creating and distributing on-line
documents in hypertext form, with linked images and sound segments.
These hyperdocuments can be electronically browsed for learning,
research, reference, or instant help purposes.
The package includes a TSR shell for popping up over other
applications when needed. The registered version contains an
interrupt-triggered shell with which you can seamlessly integrate
hypertext on-line documentation into applications you develop.
You can use this to make your documentation context-sensitive.
As a registered user, you will have a license to commercially
distribute any DeskTop Advisor runtimes free of royalties, as
long as you notify Ivden Technologies, Inc. in advance in writing.
DeskTop Advisor has been developed by Phil Grenetz and is marketed
by Ivden Technologies, Inc. Although it is copyrighted material,
the DeskTop Advisor runtime browser is distributed as freeware in
the DA-BROWS.ZIP archive file to promote awareness and use of
this electronic publishing technology and to provide access to
the growing base of publicly available hyperdocuments authored
using the DeskTop Advisor system.
For instance, the Philadelphia Area Computer Society (PACS)
Shareware Library Catalog has been distributed as a DeskTop Advisor
hyperdocument. Interactive Media resource guides and tutorials
are also available in this form on several BBSs and information
services, e.g., CompuServe: GO MULTIMEDIA.
-----SHAREWARE CONCEPT--------------------------------------------------
"Shareware" is a term used to describe a system for distribution of
software. Under the shareware concept, software may be freely
copied and passed along to others, or distributed through bulletin
board systems, shareware distribution companies, etc.
As a recipient of a shareware program, you may use the software for
a short trial period to determine if it meets your needs. If it
does, you pay the registration fee. By paying the fee, you are
granted the right to retain the software for your use. If the
software is not suitable, then you may discard it.
The shareware system provides substantial benefits to the computing
community (of which YOU are a member):
a) You get to try out the software BEFORE you buy it so you know
exactly what you're buying.
b) Shareware is substantially less expensive than most commercial
programs. You don't pay for costly marketing programs and
fancy packaging.
c) You get access to a MUCH broader base of available programs.
Thousands of excellent programs have been written by expert
programmers who would never consider marketing commercially.
Through the concept of shareware, these people make their
programs available to the community. Usually, all they ask in
return is a small fee to reward them for the time and effort
they've put into the program.
The system is based entirely on the honor system, and generally
works quite well. (Most people are honest and wouldn't violate the
trust placed in them by the author of the software.)
Shareware is NOT free software - the author counts on your
integrity. See Why and How to Become a Registered User.
You are encouraged to copy this software and pass it along to
others who may be interested in using it.

===== Installation =====================================
The installation procedure for DeskTop Advisor is quite simple.
The package includes a program, "INSTALL.EXE", which automates the
entire process. You will need about 3 MB of available disk space
on the hard drive on which you plan to install DeskTop Advisor.
The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received
the product.
INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
o Place DeskTop Advisor distribution diskette "Disk 1" in the
appropriate diskette drive.
o Execute the "INSTALL" program on the distribution diskette.
For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A:, type
A: (and press Enter) to make drive A: the current drive. Then,
type the command "INSTALL d". replacing d with the drive letter
of the hard disk on which you wish to install the product
(typically C or D).
o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
You will have a chance to abort the installation before any
changes are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.
If you received DeskTop Advisor on two diskettes, you will need
to insert Disk 2 in the diskette drive when asked to do so.
The installation program will create a directory named DTA on
the destination hard disk and copy all the files which constitute
the product to that directory. It will make no other changes.
It will not modify your autoexec.bat or config.sys files.
INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
If you downloaded DeskTop Advisor from a BBS (or received it in the
form of archive files from some other source), you will need to perform
the following steps.
o Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
directory on your hard drive. The procedure for doing this
varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
perform this step. If not, you should be able to obtain
directions for this from the same source from which you received
the package.
o Execute the "INSTALL" program which you have extracted. For
example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
the DeskTop Advisor package is C:\TEMPDIR, type C: (and Enter) to
make drive C: the current drive. Next, type the MS-DOS command
"CD \TEMPDIR" to locate in the \TEMPDIR directory. Then, type
the command "INSTALL d", replacing d with the drive letter of the
hard disk on which you wish to install the product (probably C in
this example).
o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
You will have a chance to abort the installation before any
changes are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.
The installation program will create a directory named DTA on
the destination hard disk and copy all the files which constitute
the product to that directory. It will make no other changes.
It will not modify your autoexec.bat or config.sys files.
When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you should
delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed DeskTop Advisor
(C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its contents.
YOU'RE READY TO GO
Once you've completed the installation, you should consult the documents
(README.1ST and files with extension "DOC") which have been installed.
In particular, read at least the "Introduction" and "Shareware Concept"
sections of the file README.1ST. That document will tell you how to
invoke the program, and will give you other information you need to
properly evaluate DeskTop Advisor. We hope you enjoy the product.
-----USAGE NOTES--------------------------------------------------------
The following notes should help you get a quick start in using
DeskTop Advisor.
-----AUTHORING----------------------------------------------------------
After completing the installation, take some time to browse the
on-line user manual. It is informative and serves as a sample
runtime hyperdocument.
In the authoring environment, a hyperdocument is also called a
'knowledge base'. To learn about the authoring environment,
locate in the DTA directory of the drive on which you installed
the product and enter:
DA AUTHRMAN
When you are finished browsing the on-line manual, enter the
authoring environment by entering:
DTA
Follow the menus and prompts to create a new knowledge base. You
can access the on-line manual from the Help menu. Consult it as
needed throughout the authoring process. Enjoy the experience!!
-----SOUND SUPPORT (tm)-------------------------------------------------
DeskTop Advisor incorporates audio technology to enhance the
communication process. Sound Support files are accessible in
the DeskTop Advisor authoring system and the runtime browser. They
are segments of digitally recorded audio narrative intended to augment
the traditional on-line help screens. They are stored in compressed
4-bit format and can be played through your PC's internal speaker or
parallel port device, such as the Covox Speech Thing.
You can also add sound to your own hyperdocuments. See the manual.
