  122. system and browser (Version 2.0), by Ivden Technologies, Inc.  This
  123. document contains only a brief description of the package and its
  124. features, along with instructions for its installation.  Detailed
  125. documentation is included in the package, but it is in archived form,
  126. and is more easily read after installation.

  129. multimedia documents or develop context-sensitive, hypertext help
  130. systems, then DeskTop Advisor is the program for you.

  132. DeskTop Advisor is a shareware program.  This evaluation version
  133. includes all features of the program, and is not crippled in any way.
  134. You may use it for up to 30 days, without charge (see README.1ST for
  135. more details).  If you like the program, and wish to continue its use
  136. after this evaluation period, you are required to pay for the program
  137. (see REGISTER.FRM for more details).  Any fee you may have paid to

  147. DeskTop Advisor is a hyperdocument authoring and delivery system.
  148. It is an easy-to-use tool for creating and distributing on-line
  149. documents in hypertext form, with linked images and sound segments.
  150. These hyperdocuments can be electronically browsed for learning,
  151. research, reference, or instant help purposes.

  153. The package includes a TSR shell for popping up over other
  154. applications when needed.  The registered version contains an
  155. interrupt-triggered shell with which you can seamlessly integrate
  156. hypertext on-line documentation into applications you develop.
  157. You can use this to make your documentation context-sensitive.
  158. As a registered user, you will have a license to commercially
  159. distribute any DeskTop Advisor runtimes free of royalties, as
  160. long as you notify Ivden Technologies, Inc. in advance in writing.

  162. DeskTop Advisor has been developed by Phil Grenetz and is marketed
  163. by Ivden Technologies, Inc.  Although it is copyrighted material,
  164. the DeskTop Advisor runtime browser is distributed as freeware in
  165. the DA-BROWS.ZIP archive file to promote awareness and use of
  166. this electronic publishing technology and to provide access to
  167. the growing base of publicly available hyperdocuments authored
  168. using the DeskTop Advisor system.

  170. For instance, the Philadelphia Area Computer Society (PACS)
  171. Shareware Library Catalog has been distributed as a DeskTop Advisor
  172. hyperdocument.  Interactive Media resource guides and tutorials
  173. are also available in this form on several BBSs and information

  177. -----SHAREWARE CONCEPT--------------------------------------------------

  179. "Shareware" is a term used to describe a system for distribution of
  180. software.  Under the shareware concept, software may be freely
  181. copied and passed along to others, or distributed through bulletin

  334. ===== Installation =====================================
  335.  
  336. The installation procedure for DeskTop Advisor is quite simple.
  337. The package includes a program, "INSTALL.EXE", which automates the
  338. entire process.  You will need about 3 MB of available disk space
  339. on the hard drive on which you plan to install DeskTop Advisor.
  340.  
  341. The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received
  342. the product.
  343.  
  344.  
  345. INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
  346.  
  347. To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
  348.  
  349.    o  Place DeskTop Advisor distribution diskette "Disk 1" in the
  350.       appropriate diskette drive.
  351.  
  352.    o  Execute the "INSTALL" program on the distribution diskette.
  353.       For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A:, type
  354.       A: (and press Enter) to make drive A: the current drive.  Then,
  355.       type the command "INSTALL d". replacing d with the drive letter
  356.       of the hard disk on which you wish to install the product
  357.       (typically C or D).
  358.  
  359.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  360.       You will have a chance to abort the installation before any
  361.       changes are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.
  362.       If you received DeskTop Advisor on two diskettes, you will need
  363.       to insert Disk 2 in the diskette drive when asked to do so.
  364.  
  365.       The installation program will create a directory named DTA on
  366.       the destination hard disk and copy all the files which constitute
  367.       the product to that directory.  It will make no other changes.
  368.       It will not modify your autoexec.bat or config.sys files.
  369.  
  370.  
  371. INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
  372.  
  373. If you downloaded DeskTop Advisor from a BBS (or received it in the
  374. form of archive files from some other source), you will need to perform
  375. the following steps.
  376.  
  377.    o  Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
  378.       directory on your hard drive.  The procedure for doing this
  379.       varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
  380.       In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
  381.       that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
  382.       perform this step.  If not, you should be able to obtain
  383.       directions for this from the same source from which you received
  384.       the package.
  385.  
  386.    o  Execute the "INSTALL" program which you have extracted.  For
  387.       example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
  388.       the DeskTop Advisor package is C:\TEMPDIR, type C: (and Enter) to
  389.       make drive C: the current drive.  Next, type the MS-DOS command
  390.       "CD \TEMPDIR" to locate in the \TEMPDIR directory.  Then, type
  391.       the command "INSTALL d", replacing d with the drive letter of the
  392.       hard disk on which you wish to install the product (probably C in
  393.       this example).

  395.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  396.       You will have a chance to abort the installation before any
  397.       changes are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.

  399.       The installation program will create a directory named DTA on
  400.       the destination hard disk and copy all the files which constitute
  401.       the product to that directory.  It will make no other changes.

  404. When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you should
  405. delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed DeskTop Advisor
  406. (C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its contents.

  411. Once you've completed the installation, you should consult the documents
  412. (README.1ST and files with extension "DOC") which have been installed.
  413. In particular, read at least the "Introduction" and "Shareware Concept"
  414. sections of the file README.1ST.  That document will tell you how to
  415. invoke the program, and will give you other information you need to
  416. properly evaluate DeskTop Advisor.  We hope you enjoy the product.

  428. on-line user manual.  It is informative and serves as a sample
  429. runtime hyperdocument.

  431. In the authoring environment, a hyperdocument is also called a
  432. 'knowledge base'.  To learn about the authoring environment,
  433. locate in the DTA directory of the drive on which you installed
  434. the product and enter:

  438. When you are finished browsing the on-line manual, enter the
  439. authoring environment by entering:

  443. Follow the menus and prompts to create a new knowledge base.  You
  444. can access the on-line manual from the Help menu.  Consult it as

  450. DeskTop Advisor incorporates audio technology to enhance the
  451. communication process.  Sound Support files are accessible in
  452. the DeskTop Advisor authoring system and the runtime browser.  They
  453. are segments of digitally recorded audio narrative intended to augment
  454. the traditional on-line help screens.  They are stored in compressed
  455. 4-bit format and can be played through your PC's internal speaker or
  456. parallel port device, such as the Covox Speech Thing.
